Pull out your most sophisticated outfits, make your hair appointments, grab a parasol and pack a picnic basket, for it’s that time of year again! The 39th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival is back at the Hollywood Bowl on June 10 and 11, 2017, presented by the LA Phil, and tickets for both Saturday and Sunday are on sale now.
Prices range from $21 to $176 for each day, with concerts starting at 3 p.m. and going until about 10:30 p.m. Comedian George Lopez hosts each day, which both feature top acts performing a wide range of musical styles.
Saturday’s lineup includes a much-anticipated mash-up of two terrific blues-jazz legends, as TajMo’: The Taj Mahal & Keb’ Mo’ Band brings together those talented artists. Corinne Bailey Rae will also serenade the sure-to-be-happy audience; Arturo Sandoval leads his Latin Big Band, celebrating Bobby Hutcherson, Stefon Harris, Roy Ayers and Warren Wolf; and The California Honeydrops will combine funk, soul, jazz and more into a winning combination that’s sure to get people dancing in the aisles. Other performers on Saturday are Marcus Miller with special guest Rahsaan Patterson; Hudson with Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski and John Scofield; Jacob Collier; The Django Festival Allstars; and the CSULB Pacific Standard Time Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Christine Guter.
Sunday brings another full day of musical maestros to the Hollywood Bowl, with talents ranging from Common and Gregory Porter to Lalah Hathaway, the Hamilton De Holanda Trio, The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and Miles Mosley & The West Coast Get Down. Also on the bill are Carl Allen & The Art of Elvin, Cory Hamilton & The Funk Apostles and the LAUSD/Beyond the Bell Jazz Band under the direction of Tony White and J. B. Dyas. In addition, Playboy Jazz Fest attendees will get to hear The Kenny Garrett Quintet and see the JazzAntiqua Dance Ensemble perform together in a world premiere collaboration.
It’s sure to be a weekend filled with memorable moments – and naturally, the fantastic Southern California weather is predicted to be perfect, 75F and sunny both days. Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a blanket, too, for evenings at the Hollywood Bowl do tend to get a bit chilly.
