On August 19, Brouwerij West, the craft brewery in San Pedro, Calif., celebrated Summer 2017 with a blowout party. From late afternoon to well into the night, the party rocked at their warehouse courtyard located at 110 East 22nd Street as the mostly Belgian-style beer brewery presented one of their free parties called “Popfuji.” The celebration featured their German-style beer, a Pilsner named Popfuji (in honor of the ancient Roman holiday known as Poplifugia). All their tasty brews were available for purchase, along with food from several trucks and vendors spread out in the courtyard.

Several local bands played short sets and a DJ provided up-tempo tunes in between the band gigs. The outside courtyard area and brewery warehouse space had picnic tables for people to relax while enjoying the food and live music. Popfuji attracted crowds of people, families and their four-legged friends as well. The hot daytime sun eventually set and it turned into a chilly night, but the energetic tunes from Death Valley Girls and Mike Watt & The Secondmen kept the crowd warm after dark.

In addition to the malty, refreshing and slightly hoppy PopFuji pilsner, guests could choose from several Brouwerij West selections. Dog Ate My Homework is an intensely fruit-forward saison beer brewed with blackberry juice. Wallpaper Camouflage is an extremely smooth Belgian pale ale that is closest to a traditional wheat. San Souci is a Belgian-brett pale ale that is noticeably hoppier. Starfish is an IPA with flavor-forward hops and bitterness.

The food trucks at the event offered a variety of tasty delights that paired wonderfully with the beer selections. Al and Dora’s Rollin’ BBQ had a tender, delicious pulled-pork sandwich. Garcia Shack Catering had a variety of Mexican specialties. Their al pastor, carne asada and chicken tacos were excellent. Mandoline Grill served Vietnamese nachos loaded with pork, cilantro and creamy sauce that was a delectable fusion of Asian and Mexican flavors.

Shady Grove Foods had a nice variety of grilled selections. Their grilled corn with jalapeño cilantro mayo, cotija cheese and tajin was incredible. They also served juicy chicken legs with a spicy, complex dry rub. Yummy Pie Babies truck offered several pies and cookies to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.

Brouwerij West is open for tastings seven days a week at their brewery. A rotating list of food trucks is always on site. The brewery space can be rented for private parties and there is always an abundance of free parking. We hope there will be more parties like Popfuji at the brewery in the future, but until then, we suggest you go and taste their delicious brews anytime you’re in the mood for a local craft-brewed beer.
