Restaurant: District 13 Gastro pub a winner on Cahuenga

By Andy J. Gordon

The Cahuenga corridor north of Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood is jammed with bars, clubs, restaurants and hangouts trying desperately to attract the abundant night owls in the neighborhood. Nestled into the middle of a mini-mall at the corner of Selma Ave. and Cahuenga Blvd. is District 13 a gastro pub that stands out from the crowd with an expertly selected assortment of craft beers and some fine pub food.

The interior is urban chic with exposed ceilings, graffiti/hipster artwork and a few big flat screen TVs. One wall of District 13 has regularly updated blackboard listings of all the beers on tap. It can be a little overwhelming, but with the assistance of the knowledgeable bartenders, any palette preferences can be met with the excellent variety of tasty offerings. Before making any menu selections, try a few beer samples. The friendly staff will happily pour some taster sized portions and let you decide what to choose for a full pint. Our visit started with a delicious Belgian ale called Delerium Tremens. We also enjoyed the bright, fruity Hanger 24 Orange Wheat and the slightly spicy Widmer Lemongrass. The selections range from low alcohol light lagers to high octane full bodied ales, porters, stouts and IPAs.

The District 13 menu offers many pub standards, but their specialty is a diverse selection of expertly prepared sausages. The choices are divided between traditional and exotic. Among the traditional sausages, we sampled the smoked bratwurst, andouille and spicy Italian which were all very tasty. The exotics include lamb merquez, alligator andouille and elk, but the one that really stood out was the wild boar. It was made with roasted garlic and marsala wine, enhancing the rich flavor of the wild pig. All of the sausages come with a brioche bun, a selection of interesting condiments and yummy toppings. The best way to order is to get a combination platter of three sausages and three toppings. Other excellent menu items include some creative burgers, salads, nachos and outrageously delicious garlic parmesan fries.

District 13 has a few specials like early evening happy hours, Wednesday night trivia, Thursday night live music and additional specials during football season. Check their Facebook page regularly to see what is going on. With a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, great beer choices and fine pub grub, you’ll definitely have a good time at District 13.
