Restaurants: West 4th and Jane’s New Spring Menu and Fine Brews

By Andy J. Gordon

West 4th and Jane is a brew pub in downtown Santa Monica that just celebrated their third anniversary. They have a reputation for excellent craft beer selections and now have a new chef who has overhauled the menu. A recent Spring Menu Launch Party was the perfect opportunity to check out what has changed at this hip Westside hangout for beer lovers.

Owners Steve Lieberman and Keith O’Brian are old friends from New York that opened the place with a NYC vibe in the Los Angeles beach community. Beer is the defining element of the place and a strong emphasis is placed on carefully selected brews from around the world. The owners recently brought in Ryan Turner as the new Executive Chef. Turner spent time in kitchens in his native Portland, San Francisco and most recently Vu in Marina Del Rey. He likes to use quality, fresh ingredients for his take on upscale pub grub. We sampled a few of the new items and came away impressed. A refreshing arugula salad with candied walnuts and pickled strawberries was an example of Turner’s expert use of the local farmer’s market ingredients. The fried calamari with a yuzu aioli dipping sauce was tender, crispy and tangy. The juicy pulled pork sliders were a perfect pairing for several of the great beers we sampled. We also tried the halibut on the main course menu. The fresh fish was flaky and tasty. It was presented with garlic, leeks, peas and fingerling potatoes.

West 4th and Jane has an amazing selection of beers to complement the new food items. We enjoyed the Firestone Solace Wheat Ale, Hangar 24 Orange Wheat, Kwak Belgian Strong Ale and Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen. Every type of beer is available both on tap and in bottles. With a daily happy hour from 5-7pm, drink and food specials throughout the week, sports on the flat screens and Concentration table games for your amusement, West 4th and Jane is a great place to spend an evening. Definitely check out the new menu and have some tasty brews the next time you stop by.
