Spirits: Golden Road Brewing Grand Opening at Grand Central Market

Golden Road Brewing, the largest craft beer operator in Los Angeles County, was purchased by Anheuser Busch in late 2015. That probably made a lot of fans nervous, but the international mega-brewer assured everyone concerned that the Golden Road brew master and key staff are staying on board. The only big change will be their distribution – from selectively regional to eventually nationwide and perhaps global.

While Golden Road may one day take over the world, they are growing slowly and their newest venture is a retail booth in the revitalized Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. The booth at the market has many Golden Road varieties on tap including their core brands – Point the Way IPA, Wolf Among Weeds IPA, Golden Road Hefeweizen and 329 Days of Sun Lager. They also have some of their seasonal and limited edition brews, about 20 in all, so every taste can be satisfied.

All that great beer needs some food to accompany it. There are many choices throughout the Market, but you don’t need to go anywhere else. The Golden Road booth has an eclectic menu developed by Adam Levoe, head chef for Golden Road. The selections were inspired by a recent trip he made to the Czech Republic. Try a few of their sweet or savory pierogis. The wild mushroom, al pastor and curried shrimp are all quite tasty. They also have several hot side dishes and interesting cold salads. The curried quinoa, cherry tomato caprese and coconut noodle salads are fine choices. All are filling, bursting with flavor and feature fresh, healthy ingredients.

Golden Road sold about 45,000 barrels of beer in 2015 and can be found in more than 4,000 retail locations. In addition to their home in the Atwater Village area of L.A. and the new Grand Central Market location, Golden Road recently opened a taproom in Anaheim, Calif., with a brewery on site to follow soon. With the financial backing of Anheuser Busch and their distribution muscle, we expect to see additional retail locations in the future. Also keep an eye out for some of their great beers at bars, restaurants and retailers around the country.
