You can really feel good about yourself when you go to a concert that is a fund raiser and the amazing music leaves everyone invigorated. The Mint in Los Angeles continues to book great music, and on this occasion, helped raise awareness about a problem in Louisiana that is really a problem for the entire planet. The Voice of the Wetlands Allstars is a band of great musicians that care deeply about the erosion of the wetlands in southern Louisiana and throughout the Gulf Coast. By playing live shows around the country and drawing attention to the problem, they hope to inspire people to take action. Concert: Galactic Brings the Funk to the El Rey Theater

New Orleans has a diverse music scene, and a long history of bands playing jazz/funk fusion. Galactic (www.galacticfunk.com) carries on that tradition and recently, has added elements of hip hop into their mix. On their newly released album “Ya Ka May”, the group invited a varied list of New Orleans musical talent to help with the broadening of their sound. Artists as diverse as Big Freedia (www.myspace.com/bigfreedia), a “bounce” hip hop singer, and Cyril Neville, one of the legendary founders of the Neville Brothers (www.nevilles.com/) offered their assistance with new songs. For their current tour, Galactic brought along Freedia, Neville, and Corey Henry, who is one of the talented trombonists from Rebirth Brass Band (http://rebirthbrassband.wetpaint.com/.) Their show at the El Rey consisted of new and old material. They pleased the loyal fans in attendance, and gained some new ones with the experimental diversion from their regular sound. [...]

Music: The 2009 Voodoo Experience in New Orleans

New Orleans is known for its music, and there's no better way to experience the harder edge of that musical town than to visit over Halloween weekend and take in the legendary Voodoo Experience. Three full days of musical madness held in the center of City Park, this year's fest was a combo of heavy metal madness, returning rapper, and the coolest Swampland band ever. It all began on Friday, October 30, when a slightly overcast warm day went south as the party started, just after Janelle Monae took to the Voodoo Stage and the Black Keys started up across the meadow at the Playstation/Billboard.com Stage.
