Los Angeles clubs regularly book talent from New Orleans, but it was a rare treat to see two of the four original Meters performing within a week of each other at the Mint. Leo Nocentelli, the original Meters guitarist, brought together an all-star group to form a special version of his Meters Experience. Less than one week later the Mint hosted Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste and his band. Modeliste was the original drummer of the Meters and is considered by many to be the father of modern funk drumming. Both shows drew heavily from the Meters catalog, and fans appreciated the opportunity to hear the two legends perform their classic hits as well as other funky material.
Legendary funk guitarist Leo Nocentelli (www.nocentelli.com/), a founding member of the Meters, and his band, the Meters Experience played a funk and blues infused show at Harvelle’s (www.harvelles.com) on Saturday, November 13, 2010. Although Nocentelli lives in Los Angeles, he rarely gets to play here because of his extensive touring, so this rare local show was a real treat. The band kept the packed house grooving to funky beats throughout the night.
Los Angeles was ground central for an invasion of talented New Orleans musicians during the middle weekend of January 2010. On consecutive nights, two of the city's best music venues, the Roxy Theatre (www.theroxyonsunset.com/) and the Mint (www.themintla.com/), hosted some of the greatest brass band, funk, and rock legends to come out of the Crescent City in the last 40 years. Friday night’s crowd at the Roxy on Sunset Boulevard was pumped up for Rebirth Brass Band (www.myspace.com/rebirthbrassband) and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk (www.dumpstaphunk.com/). On Saturday, an industry-heavy crowd witnessed an all-star jam at the Mint led by Leo Nocentelli (www.nocentelli.com/) of the legendary Meters, and Stanton Moore (www.stantonmoore.com/) of Galactic.
