Concert: Stanton Moore Trio with Karl Denson at the Mint

Los Angeles area drummers, students, and funk music fans had an extraordinary opportunity to get an up close view of one of the world’s most prolific musicians from New Orleans. Stanton Moore, the brilliant master of the skins, and founding member of Galactic, brought his Stanton Moore Trio to the Mint for a Wednesday nights residency in July 2011. To add a cherry to the proverbial sundae, Moore gave free drum clinics before each of the Mint gigs. Twenty to forty aspiring drummers, and those just interested in seeing Moore’s incredible technique up close, attended each of the free sessions. Robert Walter, a wizard on the Hammond B3 organ, was a member for all of the Mint gigs, while a different guest joined the trio for each of the four shows. [...]

Concert: Dirty Dozen Brass Band bring the party to The Mint

New Orleans bands know that when they travel through Los Angeles, they have to hit The Mint for the best, most rabid fans. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band show on May 23, 2011 at the Mint brought out lots of New Orleans transplants and lovers of rousing brass band music. The opening act, a local band called Super Duper, contributed a wacky and exciting set that concluded with a pleasantly odd version of “Welcome to the Jungle,” with a tease of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” That warm up prepared the audience for some New Orleans party music. The San Diego based funk and jazz group, Greyboy Allstars came to the Mint in Los Angeles on April 23, 2011. This group of talented musicians each has other successful musical projects, so a live Allstars show is relatively rare, and highly anticipated by fans. When these guys get together, anything is possible, and a long night of improvisational magic is usually the result. Concert: Galactic and Friends at the El Rey Theater

New Orleans bands often cross musical genres, and Galactic is no exception. In fact, they are at the forefront of being innovative while keeping their jazz and funk roots alive. They came to the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on March 31, 2011 with a couple of special guests, Cyril Neville, and Corey Henry.
